Early evening bird call - Central Scotland

Hi Scozmos, I'm not sure what the above is but there is only one bird in your recording and it's a Chaffinch; it's the common sound of a Chaffinch scratting around in the trees. It's as a recognisable to me as a Blue Tit scratting around and I doubt many would mistake that. The only reason I...

Early evening bird call - Central Scotland

Agree. 'One bird in the recording and it's a Chaffinch. I'd only disagree in that I don't find it odd. It's a Chaffinch sound I hear regularly when they tucked away in trees.

Upgrading from Bridge Camera to M43

'Seems very sensible and honest to take responsibility as opposed to blaming the camera. That old saying that you (general you) can't solve a problem if you don't know the problem, applies to camera use. What I would add to your post, MM, is that the more time you spend around birds the better...

    Blackcap and garden warbler

Aye, I knew what Jay meant in the sense his area isn't a place for Garden Warbler. I'd have said the same in that 'round here we get Blackcaps out the back but it's just not a place for Garden Warbler. I understood what Butty meant as well in that birds can turn up almost anywhere during...

    Blackcap and garden warbler

Maybe the answer lies somewhere in between in that Jay doesn't see or hear Garden Warblers in his area and they're not seen or heard by other people, which was a point worth making by Jay. Yes, there is always the possibility of a migrant but there is also the case that these birds are...

    Wheatear Breeding Habits

That's what I suspected but kept a bit of probably misplaced optimism. I did have a look at a map of Wheatear breeding distribution and there is a small population on the North East coast. It's not clear from the map where exactly, i.e Yorkshire or Durham. Also, I had a look 'round at other...

    Fair enough, Jay.

    Wheatear Breeding Habits

'Any experts out there who can comment on whether or nor Wheatear breed in farmland areas nearer to the coast than uplands, particularly in County Durham? I appreciate that once upon a time this was a farmland bird but is it still the case? Wheatear have been in this farmland/closer to the...

    Blackcap and garden warbler

We can safely rule out a Blackbird. The bird in the recording doesn't have anywhere near the beauty of the Blackbird song.

    Blackcap and garden warbler

That was my initial thought, but I've had that before with recordings on other birds (and it definitely was the bird that I didn't think the recording sounded like). I'd imagine there can be a sound distortion in terms of what you hear with your own ear versus the sound via a recording. I can't...

Jay, Did you see this bird?

    Blackcap and garden warbler

Fair enough, Pat, I can't dispute how you interpret birds' songs. On the other hand, I reckon your view of the Blackcap versus the Garden Warbler songs would be in a very, very small minority opinion.

    Blackcap and garden warbler

You have it the wrong way 'round, surely. A Garden Warbler is like a half-way house between the fluty sound of the Blackcap and the scratchy, more hurried sound of the like of Whitethroats. To the OP: I'd imagine that a search on You Tube will produce the songs of these three birds and the...

'Lovely birds to have 'round the corner, Gerry. No humans for miles. 'Just me, the Wheatear and sheep!

    Wheatear (male)

This little bird was roaming around with a female in tow yesterday morning, feeding very close to one another. 'Sun was shining, virtually no wind, no bother whatsoever, everyone was happy and co-existing peacefully. Then he attacked the female out of nowhere. As she flew out of the area another...

    Little Owl

'Having a look 'round the grass for anything interesting scurrying about. You wouldn't want to be a beetle with that face and those talons coming at you.

    Northern Wheatear (female)

This little bird and associate Wheatear, about eight of them, mix of male and female; were scurrying around farmland about half a mile from where I live (yesterday). In the past, I've travelled 30 miles to uplands to see these birds and it turns out they're on my doorstep. For anybody who is not...
