    Phonescoping with ED78/82

I don't have an ED 82 anymore, but I do phonescope with the similar Monarch 82 ED. PhoneSkope adapter works well, with decent results this of a Great Horned Owl.

Florida USA (Central FL, Gulf Coast) - Leucistic crow?

Looks like there's some residual gape flange showing - might be a fledgling. So, the calling birds may be the parents. Just a thought on ID possibility. (How's that for definitive? 😉 )

    Michigan - female bird?

    Female Brown-headed Cowbird?

    Zeiss

While there are individual variations in optics, I have used extensively two Gavias, and come away disappointed. They couldn't hold a candle to my Nikon Monarch ED 82. At about $1600 US, it should be in your price range. See the thread about the Nikon...

Mallard (I think)? American Black Duck? Hybrid?

So, this is from maybe February? Mallards molt into breeding plumage in autumn, don't they? (And as I recall anatid breeding plumage is basic?) I can't comment on any strange hormones, but it's definitely not a Black. I'm in SE AZ, and we see MALL x MEDU all the time, and I don't see any...

Compact Camera Suggestions? Upgrading from Canon PowerShot SX720 HS

I recommend Steve Ingraham's online booklet to help you manage the settings. https://psnp.info/psnp_/?p=1525

Compact Camera Suggestions? Upgrading from Canon PowerShot SX720 HS

Andy, I'm sure you'll love the Sony. On the back of the camera, the circular selector has DISP at the top. With the camera on, toggle that until you get the display that suits you.

    Røde VideoMic Me

In previous posts, I have mentioned this microphone as a small form-factor solution to recording bird sounds. And, I've usually denigrated the recording app which the company recommends - the Røde Reporter. I had found it unreliable, and the sharing feature (pushing to cloud storage) generally...

    What's your most used binocular?

Zeiss Victory SF 8x42. I've had them nearly six years and use them every day, across North America and the Neotropics. Never looked through another make/model that makes me want to switch. They're perfect for me.

Can I just confirm ID please?

    Yeah, but what time? 😉

New birder in GA trying to figure out where to buy binoculars where I can try them out.

Wild Birds Unlimited (in Atlanta and Decatur) carry Vortex, and most REIs carry Nikon. They would give you another hands-on opportunity.

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

Fair enough. For myself, I answered 1. As a birder, I have experienced the bird sufficiently, whether seen or heard, for it to count towards my life total. It's been interesting to read different views of "sufficiency."

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

My recording of an unseen Coraya Wren. Why would I not count that? (No, there was no one hiding in the thicket doing playback 😉)

4 Days in Southern Arizona Late April

For 5-stripe, Box and Montosa Canyons will be much better than California Gulch. Closer and more accessible. eBird reports will be your best guide.

Compact recording device for long term birding trip

Yes, I think it does. I've experimented, comparing recordings made with the naked phone (Pixel 8 Pro) and with the Røde mic plugged in. To my ear, there was better fidelity with the mic in use, and certainly better side noise rejection. It's not a Sennheiser (!), but at three inches in length...

Compact recording device for long term birding trip

A Røde VideoMicMe (there's an iPhone version) will give you a better microphone with better directionality and a dead cat. The app that comes with the mic - Røde Reporter - is terrible and unreliable. Merlin is already recording at audio CD quality (44.1khz/16 bit); you can get a greater...

    New AX Visio 10x32 binocular

James, I predict you will start having to review eBird reports that not only sat "Merlin confirms," but "Swaro sez!"

    Shaming birdwatchers on social media

Hmmm. Is that a problem with the product, or the user?

USA, Maryland, January, similar to downy/hairy woodpecker but entire top of head red

My Red breasted suggestion was from a rushed reading of your description. I was heading out birding. 😉 Sounds more like a Yellow-bellied.

USA, Maryland, January, similar to downy/hairy woodpecker but entire top of head red

Can you locate a picture of a Red-breasted Sapsucker? It would obviously be quite rare!

Thanks, D. I had not checked the eBird reports.

    Coldstream, B.C. Canada January 8, 2024

This is a tough one, for even with your excellent pictures! With its relatively long neck, more forward eye placement, paler nape, and heavy feet, I lean towards Cooper's. Tail length and amount of (worn) white at the tip is consistent with Coop. HOWEVER, this bird is north of the usual range...
