    Thank you all!

    LBB, northern California

They looked the part but the flock must have been around 100 or so birds and there were no male Brewer's Blackbirds. Could it have been a flock of juvenile BBs?

Saw these little brown birds whilst watching the sandhill cranes come in to roost near Lodi, CA. They are about blackbird size and were alternating between feeding in the fields and sitting on the electricity wires. My guess is brown-headed cowbirds but the bodies are more brown than black.

Ducks in flight, East Anglia, UK

I identified these as mandarins, but would appreciate confirmation or alternative ID from persons more experienced than myself. Spotted in mid-East Anglia on an early morning stroll. Thank you!

    X-T3 for bird photography

Here are my birding / nature AF settings, in case anyone is interested: basic AF settings: AF-C, custom setting 6, shutter priority: release - tracking sensitivity (0 - 4): usually 1 or 2, depending on what I'm photographing. If the trajectory is unpredictable or hard to track, I'll choose 1...

    Harrier ID - Suffolk, UK

Thank you both! I had read about and seen photos of the variation in plumage amongst marsh harriers, but wasn't sure. Are both birds marsh harriers, would you say?

    Harrier ID - Suffolk, UK

I photographed two birds whilst out walking the dog; I assumed they were red kites, and as they were distant, I just snapped a few shots for ID purposes. The first two images are of the same bird, presumably a ringtail hen harrier. The second bird has the colours I'd associate with a marsh...

    Using bike lights for birding?

I'll do some tests this evening and see whether they will work (they are pretty bright, although the light may not be directional enough to be useful). Previous threads I'd read here and elsewhere were talking about expensive high-powered fancy torches, which seemed a bit OTT for my purposes...

    Using bike lights for birding?

Thanks Pyrtle - that is helpful. Which model of torch was it that you got, out of interest?

    Using bike lights for birding?

I've read about using lights with red filters for nighttime birding/mammal watching, and was wondering whether I can use my rear bike lights for that purpose. I'm going to Skomer next week and have been advised to take some lights with a red filter for watching the Manx shearwaters. Beyond this...

    Early April birding best bets

Yeah -- I am aware it's early in the season, but unfortunately I was not able to change my time off work, and I thought I may as well do something more adventurous than a staycation in East Anglia. I am having a couple of nights on Skomer, and am currently working out a route and stopover points...

    Early April birding best bets

Thank you for the suggestions -- excellent ideas. Black guillemot and chough would definitely be ticks I'd love to get. :D

    Early April birding best bets

I have the first week of April off work; my previous plans fell through so I'm now planning a birding/wildlife-focused UK break instead. I'm near Newmarket in Suffolk/East Anglia so ideally I'd like to see some other parts of the country. I was thinking about a trip over to SW Wales and Skomer...

    X-T3 for bird photography

To briefly revive this thread, I have been using the X-T2 and got myself an X-T3 a few weeks ago after reading the reports of other users in the DPReview Fuji forum. I'm really pleased with the purchase; the AF is noticeably snappier and I was already a fan of the high ISO performance (my main...

Amazing-looking caterpillar even without the wasp pupae. Great find and image!

    Somerset Seagull Murderer

After seeing the belly on the guy who did it, the gull was doing him a favour! What kind of excuse for a human being gets that angry about a single stolen chip?

A couple of non-seabirds from Bempton Cliffs, UK

A few birds spotted at Bempton Cliffs (NE UK) earlier this week that are eluding my (rather poor) identification skills. Side-on bird on the barbed wire: yellow wagtail? meadow pipit? The two on the post-and-rail fence: reed buntings? (Not sure why I didn't take a photo focused on the closer...

    Ducks, East Anglia, UK

I identified these ducks before, but now I can't for the life of me find them in my bird books! Apologies for the poor photos -- the ducks were in the background whilst shooting a different bird.

Camera/lens recommendations for BIF in low light

@Chosun Juan I do have a 1.4 TC for extra reach, although most of the time I haven't needed it. The light weight of the rig is definitely appreciated; it's easy to handle and carry around, so I don't need to think twice about taking it out on walks, etc. @ljclark Thanks for the tips and links...
