Massachusetts US today. Funny looking thing

Sure is funny looking. Reminds me of a greater yellow legs but its eyeballs seem too high and the rump too short. Suggestions welcome! It was in some brambles with dead leaves and mud close by.

Peregrine falcon spotted by its mess

I was making a nostalgia visit to my old University, UMass Amherst, last week and saw a very large white splotch on the library tower. Looking more closely there was a peregrine falcon on a post at the very top window of the mess. Based on the mess, I guess the falcon likes this spot. I...

Hidden it moved from right to left

There were some "Chirp, chirps" and some rustling in the bushes. It started on the right hand side about 6 feet up. I could see the little branches move. Every now than then I saw something block the small specks of light shining through from the other side of the bush. In a few moments I could...

    Bird "face recognition" software??

Facts 1: Anyone with a lot of people photos may have tried Picassa 3 or other face recognition software for people so that you can find all of your photos of Grandma or something. It works incredibly well. 2: I see that ebird has an ap that will identify a bird species based on a photo. Put...

Yellow Bellied Sapsucker? Massachusetts USA Today

I'm pretty sure but looking for confirmation that is a yellow-bellied sapsucker. If so it's a first for me. I had not been out for a few weeks, been cold, but went out today for only a few minutes and saw this in my back yard. He's looking very puffy. I guess because it's cold out.

Hi I don't know what this bird is. After about 5 days with this bird singing all day long hidden in leaved out trees and many hours failing to even find it, this morning it finally showed itself on dead twig! The direction of the sun was really bad so I've tried to adjust contrast, etc.. to get...

    Superzoom replacement for Canon SX50

Hi there. It's been a while since I last visited but my birthday is coming up and I'm looking for possible replacements for my aging Canon Powershot SX50's. I have three of them but they are all developing quirks as they age. I'm looking closely at the Lunix FZ80 as one possibility but have not...

Maine, USA a couple days ago

Having troubles with these. Clearly two different birds. They were flipping about in a bush together so I think an adult and its chick. But not sure what. Perhaps Ruby-Crowned Kinglet or perhaps Myrtle Yellow-Rumped Warbler?

    Bald Eagle drowns a gull

I got this series of photos on the coast of in Maine, US last week. It looks to me that the bald eagle is drowning a gull. I know that bald eagles usually feed on fish (frequently stolen from an Osprey) but I guess that bald eagles will do this.

Duck-like Ocean Bird, Maine USA May 2018

I've been going through my photos of all of my trips to the ocean in Maine this season just finishing and this bird, I don't know. First glance I thought a Goldeneye or Bufflehead but now that I've looked at it clearly not. All I can say is that it's in the ocean close to the shore in Maine...

Great Horned Owl threat to big house cats?

My cats have a cat flap door that lets them into an enclosed area behind my house. They can't get out and ground based predictors, coyotes, fox, etc.. can't get in. Last night for the first time ever I saw what I believe to be, because of it's huge size, a great horned owl perched in a tree...

    Tokyo Japan today

Got a day out on my business trip today. Can anyone suggest what this is? It looks like a young one. Resembles our mockingbirds back home. The bird was real spunky. Always flipping it's tail as it looked for food. It was also completely uninterested that I was so close - unlike the White...

Night Bird Sound? - Massachusetts USA

I've heard this bird sound in my woods after dark the last few nights. Last night I tried to record it. It's 11pm. It's a trill that repeats about every 15 seconds. I've deleted the time between trills to reduce the length of the recording. The recording lasts about 45 seconds and has 6 separate...

Massachusetts USA Hawk or Juvenile eagle?

I took this today. It resembles a juvenile bald eagle but it was soaring in circles and going up higher and higher. It was also inland by a frozen pond where I have never seen eagles. On the other hand, if not a juvenile bald eagle, what kind of hawk? It has yellow lets but the coloration is...
