Somewhat tame mallard ducks...will they migrate

Sometime in July I had three mallard ducks show up. One actually was pecking at my French doors! So I put food out for them and gave them fresh water. Later found out that the neighbor across the lake had them since they were ducklings. They found my waterfall out back and had a blast...

I had to tak a second glance...as it perched to drink from my feeder. Never seen one marked like that... Reminded me a bit of the female red breasted...top coloring sort of...under belly and up toward chest...speckled a dark color. Nothing in my Sibley for Eastrn North America birds...guess...

Wanting to give a hummingbird feeder as a gift...suggestion ones as to a good one

I have taken down the Parasol feed because it kept attracting bees. And they seemed to find it when I moved it. The other brand which I am unsure of the name...leaked. Then I got the one I have now...no leaks...and so far no bee issues. Going on the second year of using it. (Photo attached)...

Heading on a mission trip to Magdelena,Honduras any good bird books for that area

I am not sure I'll have much time with birding...but to "not" take a bird field guide along seems foolish. What would be a good one to look up?

    Considering a Canon Rebel Ti

Canon Rebel Ti was suggested to me after I have researched and realized I need to upgrade from my Canon PowerShot S3 IS. I just am not satisfied with what I am getting out of my photos of the bird shots. I want sharper more definition photos. Is this the right direction for me?

He is getting braver...Pileated woodpecker landed in the same spot this blue jay is.

We've had the Pileated Woodpecker feeding for awhile now at the feeder. He has never came in close while we're sitting on the back patio. He'll circle around and fly off. Tonight he landed where this blue jay sits! When I grabbed the camera he flew off. I have high hopes he'll do so again...I...

Raccoon trouble...out in the middle of the day

Now many are concerned about the raccoons coming out in the daytime. One neighbor shot it thinking it must be ill. I disagree...if they are hungry...and know ones put out bird feed or cat food. They will come out to eat. They can't all be ill! I waited until almost 11am to fill the platform...

    My bird patio feeding station...

I really enjoy the birds...lol like everyone else here. We had the feeders hanging from our pergola for a few years. Not liking the mess underneath. Actually the husband had issues with it,not I. So last year when we put in our backyard waterfall...he gave me a surprise! A bird feeding...

Considering Droll Yankee's Happy Eight 2...on garden pole

Last year we had issues with the raccoon tipping the feeders making bees coat the entire outer surface to get the sugary liquid that spilled. So this year I am considering getting the garden pole and mounting it from the bottom. Possibly keeping it from tipping. (Mind you we had a similar style...

    Winterberry...a good bird friendly shrub

Looking for a good bird friendly shrub that the birds will enjoy. I seen that it is native to our area...which is said to be best when offering to birds. Do you find this true? Or should I look at another shrub?

Autumn Olive...something I may consider planting...pros and cons

I was admiring a bush near the front entrance of our lake. It is growing in the oddest place. Atop a boulder...so not planted by man. Then noticed same shrub on property we recently purchased near us. Considering transplanting it...but it says it is invasive. Which does concern me a bit...

Woodpeckers angry I moved the feeder from the pergola...Pecking the pergola now!

We are putting in a bird feeding patio. Not far from where the feeders once hung. We noticed today...tail tell signs of their not being happy. Several areas have their pecking marks. Hope they get over it soon. I much prefer my bird feeding patio housing all my bird feeders.

The feather in the cap for me...Pileated Woodpeckers at my feeder

I've had many native woodpeckers at my feeder...but the Pileated woodpecker. This year however I can pleasantly say that is no longer the case. Mind you he is very skittish. And if he is flying in while we are on the back patio he will turn and go in another direction avoiding the feeder. For...

Safe product for birds that will remove algae from waterfall

My dilemma...our backyard waterfall has algae. I sort is like it. Makes me think it has been there for a long time. However my husband didn't mind it on the large rocks be hates it in the actual smaller rock bed of the falls. Birds and critters come and drink and bathe from it. I need...

Believe this to be a rat/corn snake...snail shell stuck on head.

We found this snake in NE Ohio...not far from our house. In the run off of a creek bed that feeds into the lake where we live. I double checked my snake book...pretty sure that is the species of snake. Went back to assist the shell removal but he had it off by then.

    House Finch eye disease

I was watching a bird in the indoor feeder and noticed it had a swollen eye. First I thought a cat or something injured it...upon closer inspection another finch had issues with both eyes...they looked closed shut. Their bodies aren't swollen...so a google search I feel that they have House...
