Advice for creating a map of locations

For awhile I've had this idea of putting all the US National Wildlife refuges, Important Bird Areas, National and State parks on a map, like Google Earth then add in other important places in order to determine where I might like to retire. Things like VA centers, college towns. Would I need...

Mp3 type suggestions for birding by ear training

It seems to be that some of the actual "birding by ear" type training (Peterson's Thayer) etc. is still mostly available on CD and whats available on itunes is more id books/apps with songs for each bird. Since I have some cd's I would like to put them on an mp3 player of some sort. tried to...

    Repair for Kowa scope

I have an old non ED 663 that could use a tune up. Especially that metal band - it is no longer tight or gripping so that the scope tends to slide sideways. Do people usually send to the manufacture? Or if out of warranety are there other places that work on spotting scopes that do a good job...

Birding Retirement, where would you settle?

If you weren't considering proximity to family but access to nature, birding and affordability....where would you settle and why? I find myself the end of the line family wise with none of my own. So.....I'm looking both for help and because I think the answers will be interesting.

Help with Manfrotto/Bogen leg lever replacement

I tripped on my tripod and broke what I guess is one of the leg lever things. So the bottom part of the leg falls out. The leg seems unbent. I'm having no luck trying to find a part to fix it, all my searches come tripod head or plate issues. I don't think I know the right nomenclature. It...

    RFI Rio Grande area trip

I'm probably going to head down to the Rio Grande Festival in Harlingen but not actually have signed up for any trips. So other than a checking in on the vendors or a auditorium talk I can stay anywhere, go anywhere. If I'm staying 4 days 4 nights, (maybe 5) I was thinking maybe I should spend...

Where to go in Nov/USA? TX? FL? AZ? NC?

I have some vacation to use up by the end of the year and am looking for input based on people's experience. Things to consider -I figure 2 days travel, 4, days to bird -I am not a lister and have no particular tgt bird, but of course new to me and hard to birds are always good (I live...

Scope repair - manuf or other places?

I have an older Kowa 600 something (at least 10 yrs old) that needs some minor (I think its minor) repair. (the band around the body is loose and slipping). Do I need to send it to Kowa? Are there other places that do these sorts of things?

    SLR vs. Superzoom?

I have an old...superzoom I guess you call it - basically a digital non slr. I haven't really gotten involved in photography and am not planning to in any extensive way. However I do want to replace my Lumix with something and it seems that a good superzoom price and a cheap slr price have...

Sept Oct birding trip to PNW - should I wait?

I was thinking of going to the PNW sometime btw mid-Sept and mid-Oct as I have never been anywhere near the area. I'm not a lister and have no specific list of birds, and I would be there to see it "all" in terms of big water, big trees, big Mtn, big ferns... However birds would be pretty...

Red Rocks Wildlife Refuge in mid-Sept?

This doesn't look like to active a forum but here goes. I'm going to Yellowstone 18 Sept and people have been telling me to go south to Jackson WY and Grand Teton for better birding. I see Red Rocks WLR looks pretty amazing but someone said at that elevation most of the birds would be gone by...

    Huntsville area 1 -4 May

I've downloaded the Norther Alabama Birding Trail booklet which is really nice but I'd like to narrow things down a bit. For example there are 3 parts to the trail with many stops on each one. Any don't miss this spots and also places to stay recommendations? I'll be driving down on 1 May and...

    Destination recommendations?

I have been contemplating a mid-winter trip to FL to get a little sun in my eyeballs. I have and will do my own research but am hoping there are some good traveling recommendations out there for specifics in terms of places to fly into, places to stay etc. There are some big name places...

What determines our color sensitivity as looking through bins?

In November I was at a weekend bird festival where I got to look through some Zeiss, Swaro and Leica. Talking just color here it didn't seem as much had changed color wise for me. I still saw the Zeiss as quite yellow (which I sort of like btw because of the contrast it provides...

Swift 820 ED's, collimation, how rugged etc.?

In a post on "Other" bino's I asked for advice on whether I should buy a replacement pair of Swift 820 EDs for the car or go to a roof since I was told they are more rugged. I love my Swifts and I'm not sure if I would be having trouble with them riding around in the car for years if I hadn't...

Choices: Swift Audubon ED, Burris, Vortex???

I am in the market for new car bino's. I probably use these more than my Swarv's which only go out on important occasions. These ride around on my passenger seat, or put in the back when I have a passenger, or on the dash. They get dirty and hot and cold and some bouncing. I am looking to...
