    Peregrines called "hawks" in a book

    I am translating the book by J. A. Baker called Peregrine. It is a somewhat fictionalized but still documentary record of observations of peregrine falcon. The place is the coastal part of Essex, England, the time around the 1960s. For some reason the author often calls the bird a "hawk"...

    Hi, Thank you for having me on this forum. I am translating the book "Peregrine" by J. A. Baker, an English author. Why could he be at times calling peregrine falcons "hawks"? Could it be a generic name for birds of prey among bird watchers at that time (1960s)?
