Derbyshire County Birding (2 Viewers)

I wouldn't say unreliable but it can be consistent in mistaking the same call for the wrong thing if that's what is in its library. Last year it kept giving me redstart for chiffchaff in one location. In time you can learn what to ignore but best is to validate visually what it's saying
Ok thanks.

Is there anything at Carsington that has similar calls to a black bellied plover?

I won’t have chance to go down for a couple of weeks now or else I’d go to the same spot and try and find what it is that’s being identified as the plover.

Is it totally out of the question one could be there?

Carsington is so heavily watched it would of been reported if it was there, especially if around Stones
If you're not aware daily sightings are posted here

Several of the regulars post sightings most days on twitter and on the Derbyshire birders Facebook group as well
Haha yes I do check that blog most days!

They haven’t posted for a couple of days though. Maybe there is a black bellied plover there then?? I’m going to continue living out my fantasy anyway😁

I’ve been at carsington again today. And again my Merlin picked up a black bellied plover. In the same sort of spot as last time. I front of stones island, near to where the Great northern diver was for a few weeks.

Is this too much of a coincidence? Again it only picked it up once but it does seem to be quite distinctive and easily audible when I listen back to it. I wouldn’t know what one is supposed to sound like but it doesn’t match what is given as its calls on the app.
G the i.d
Am I imagining things?? Or is the app so unreliable it would get it wrong twice in a week?
Can you set the search criteria to European birds as it is obviously getting the id wrong. If you haven't used it Xeno Canto is a fantastic resource if you have an idea of the possibilities to compare.

Thanks Andy.

I do have the British and Irish bird pack already set up on my Merlin. I have now switched it to identify the noted birds with its given name used in the United Kingdom whereas before it was set to United States ID.

Edit: Ok interesting. Now that I’ve changed the description setting from US to Uk it’s identifying the bird as a Grey Plover. Would this be more likely?

No, because it's the same bird.

I managed to find time for another trip to Carsington today. Was very pleasant and worthwhile! Saw my first ever Red Crested Pochard in front of the sailing club. It was then spooked by a moorhen and flew away.

Very striking looking thing in person.
