Tripod, fluid head, and scope in the rain.

I use my Opticron in the wet (I pop the rubber lens and eyepiece covers on when walking ankh to save me having to dry them too often). Using the tripod is fine, but if you collapse it before it’s dry it will stay wet for a very long time. So I tend to extend it when I get home and leave it out...

    Make bins out of scopes

Interesting, most of these types of jig are for astro refractors. Wonder if anyone has got one and can offer a review? Getting the eyepieces close enough could be an issue, that is dealt with using erecting mirror systems with astro scopes. Two eyes certainly gives immersive views. Peter

    NEW PRODUCT? Swarovski Optik

The 10x52NL is expected, not sure whether the other will be a bino, some people want some updates to the ATX range, maybe wider eyepieces. What’s the date of the event? Peter

Does BTX work at all in bird watching?

Having wide two eyed views with spotting scope powers is a rare, but impressive thing. I sometimes haul a 4.5kg 70mm Astro binoscope for long distance (mostly fixed location) observing, I have the same 35x magnification (I can change with other eyepieces) but I have a noticeably wider apparent...

Is this the true future of binoculars?

Nope. Looks 10x50sized, so probably then a bit more than a kg in weight… guess! Depends on what they implement in the app. If it can take images then you might be able to feed them into Merlin. For nighttime pointing accuracy I’m wondering how precise it can be and whether plate solving is being...

    Question about binoculars case

The constant responding of the strap has damaged the nice Nikon logo on the strap of my 8x30E2, so I often leave the strap outside the case now, maybe a bigger case is what I need. Peter

Zeiss Conquest...eye cups still an issue?

How many stops do the normal and extended cups have, what is the max height difference, so we know what version we’ve got? Peter

    Aurora Borealis 10 05 24

Finally a decent view from the UK… having missed the one 20yrs ago… hopefully less time till the next good one. Peter

Zeiss Conquest...eye cups still an issue?

The mechanics of the eyecups is not the best, but the robustness and quality of the views is just great. Picked up a pair secondhand and not going want to find a “better” pair anytime soon. Peter

    New Eyepiece - SDL4

“The only change is to replacement one of the eyelens elements with ED glass to help reduce chromatic aberration.” From Pete at Opticron. Peter

    New Eyepiece - SDL4

Thanks for the heads-up! Sharper, brighter, no mention of field width, so I assume it’ll be the same. So bit narrow at the short end, opening up to. very useful width and then getting a little dim at the highest power. Be good to have a more detailed comparison of specs published?! If I was...

    Astro Eyepieces for Opticron

Certainly not for the more modern Opticron scopes. The newer Baader 8-24mm zoom, mark 4 was designed to fit some spotting scopes. It comes with a screw in tread adapter, was designed with more in focus and has a tube and sleeve round the lower lens part that makes it thinner to fit. When I...

Needed - easy way to check collimation

Porro design prisms can adjust prism angle or the slight tilt of the objective lenses. I would expect the latter are also used with roof prisms, but there may also be internal adjustable bits…. Swaro will know and be able to fix hopefully. Peter

Any "compact scopes" that you like?

This is quite compact, ultra wide 16x, could use a shorter focal length eyepiece for more power, but pocket friendly. Can use it quite well with no tri/monopod.

    Opinion on CN

I did start looking at the patents that Swarovski has filed, not the easiest things to digest. Of course much bino optical design is many decades old and so it’s about adding new materials/coating and dealing with design, ergonomic and manufacturing trade offs. The WX are great binos, but the...
