    Dutch Harbor & Tolsona Campground

Very sad to hear about the owls, i had an enjoyable evening watching them about 3 weeks ago. For the pelagic trip from Dutch Harbour - I went on a pelagic with Jeff Hancock (Aleutian Adventure Sports - www.aleutianadventure.com) out to the baby islands a couple of weeks ago. He did a whole day...

    Grey-backed Storm-Petrel? - Tasmania

Having another look at this after yesterdays brief view and response. If james could post a larger image I think it would help, any other images would also be useful... Really cant see this as a storm-petrel, just looks all wrong to me, particuarly when compared to James's two other photos of...

    Grey-backed Storm-Petrel? - Tasmania

Looks like a catharactus skua to me....so much much bigger than a storm-petrel! Bit hard to tell from the small photo and the angle but looks like a brown skua sp, or possibly a south polar?

    FZ38 vs TZ7/8/10

I'd agree with the Canon G series recommendation, think its up to G11 now? I have the G9 and its an excellent pocket camera, and I got it for many of the reasons you mention. its as close to a DSLR as you can get in a compact, lots of nice features. Do note though, if you take RAW on it you...

Boats Japan to Fiji or vice versa?

Hi, I was trying to find out if it was possible to travel between Japan and Fiji by boat? It doesnt matter which direction the trip is in, or if it is a cruise ship or ferry. My interest is in trying to see seabirds enroute. This doesnt seem to be a regular route for standard cruises, and...

Grouse and owls around Ottawa in Sept/Oct?

Hi, I've got a work trip to Ottawa for a week at the end of September/beginning of October. I'd be keen to spend a few days before or after this to get out and see some owls and grouse, so I was hoping that people might be able to suggest some good sites for these species within a reasonable...

    Tahiti petrel juvenile care. Help!

Hi Tahiti, Sounds like an interesting pet to have! It would be worth contacting the Société Calédonienne d’Ornithologie who run a programme of releasing Tahiti Petrels that are attracted by lights in towns. http://www.sco.asso.nc/ Or try the BirdLife Pacific Regional Office 10 MacGregor...

Panama, tanager, hummer and euphonia id

Thanks for the thoughts, Sounds like Fulvous-vented for the Euphonia then. Black-striped Sparrow was also suggested by someone else for the Albino, but I would still favour Rufous-collared due to the location. Bay-headed Tanagers females can apparently look like this as well, so happy to go...

Panama, tanager, hummer and euphonia id

Another trip to Panama, some more id posers... 1 & 2 Euphonia sp. taken at Cerro Azul, East of the Panama Canal, at around 800m altitude This looks good for a Fulvous-vented Euphonia Euphonia f. fulvicrissa, except it doesnt have the fulvous vent.... So I wondered about Yellow-crowned...

    Brown booby? Anguilla

Young red-footed booby's also have brown upperparts, though head and neck are generally paler than mantle. It would also show a darker bill, where as adult brown booby has a yellow bill as per your photo. This looks like a Brown Booby to me

    seasick medication

Stugeron definately works, but you need to take it about 3 hours before you go, so not ideal if your trip might be cancelled, and anyone I have ever known who has takne it has suffered from tiredness and nausea...
