Great dragonfly photos Mike, and yes all ID perfect! Those troughs are still the only sites for Orange-winged Dropwing that I know of in the North (I have almost no knowledge of dragonfly sites in the South). I’m always keen to hear of good sites, especially within striking distance of Puerto...

Hi Joe, Wryneck is relatively common and can crop up pretty much anywhere in suitable habitat. Seeing them isn’t always that easy though. Presumably you know the song - it’s always the first indication that there’s a bird nearby. Son Real is pretty reliable ( especially the areas near the hide...

It’s difficult isn’t it? Perspective depends on whether you’re inside or outside the bubble. For people not involved in twitching the fear of sheer numbers (in the UK) seems to be the main issue. Well, any of us that go to see a bird that someone else has found are contributing to that problem...

I gather that “fecal matter” has been collected, so DNA confirmation, one way or the other, should follow!

Hi Hakan, As Mike says, Nuthatch is an unlikely species for Mallorca. My late friend Pete used to say that if you heard a strange call it was probably a great tit. I once spent a long time at Son Real trying to track down a calling coal tit. I was really convinced about the call, but eventually...

Hi Mike, I went there for Black-necked Grebes in Jan 2019 (haven't been since). Here's the entry in my report of that trip: "Bassa de Can Guidet: This small, banked reservoir just north of Palma airport has a reputation for being difficult to find. I certainly didn’t find it...

Great day Mike! For me the duck is a tufted. Head shape is wrong for Ferruginous and the eye is the wrong colour (“White-eyed Pochard” was an old name for Ferruginous I believe). Stew

What’s the saying? There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.. With the senses of humour of some contributors (we know who we are), you may get a few of those, but if you need help it will always be forthcoming! Stew

Happy New Year everyone, and especially to Mike, who keeps this forum thread going so brilliantly. I got to know him via the forum, met him by chance in May 2017 and now I’m chuffed to call him a good friend. We have plans for Island visits in May and September, really looking forward to it! Stew

It was indeed an intense few days! I’d left out the details of the couple of rollockings we got, to protect the innocent.. all part of the fun of birding, and providing stories to embellish in future tellings! Stew

A couple of weeks ago Mrs B and I were lucky enough to come over and spend a long weekend with Mike and Mrs M. I've written up some notes of the birds that Mike and I saw. Hopefully this link to the notes will work: Mallorca Dec 23 report PDF.pdf Stew

Hi Erik, it’s a Coscoroba Swan - a native of South America. This is an escaped individual which has been around at various locations in the north for a while. Stew

    Mallorca 2023

Today Mike and I had a day’s local birding in the south, before Mrs B and I head back to the UK tomorrow morning. Pre-dawn there were several Stone Curlews wailing away near the harbour, and before we set off there was a Grey Wagtail in front of the apartment. Sadly we couldn’t find Rock...
