    Hirundinidae

Ah-ha, so I was correct - in saying that I might've missed something! :D Thank you. I had only looked at the chronogram, which doesn't show striolata (presumably due to some difference in the samples used).

    Hirundinidae

I don't see Striated sampled here, although I may have missed it. How are we to draw any conclusions about its status from this study?

    Field guides on color e-readers?

With the new generation of color e-readers upgrading to the new Kaleido 3 technology, has anyone had a chance to see how an ebook or pdf field guide looks on them? I'm considering purchasing a color e-reader IF it would allow me to convert my field guide collection to digital & still get the ID...

    Anatidae

The divergence dates are interesting. Those look to be at least twice the age of dates I've seen previously. Hmm.

Petition for a dedicated sub-sub forum for eponymous name rants

Could we please move all eponymous name rants to their own dedicated sub-(sub-) forum? It has become impossible to discuss any taxonomic or nomenclatural topic without a derailment into that issue. I'm ready to abandon the entire site over the whole stinking mess.

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

I didn't download anything; I followed the links from their main page (IOC World Bird List – Version 13.1) > Classification > Family Index > any of the families (e.g. Cisticolidae leads here Grassbirds, Donacobius, tetrakas, cisticolas, allies – IOC World Bird List) There we find no genus or...

    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Sorry to derail yet another eponymous name debate, but has anyone else noticed that IOC lists are currently showing only 'Genus' & 'species' instead of the actual, you know - genus & species? o_0

    Cotingas & Manakins

Yes, if you ever get close enough to see one calling, you won't really want to repeat the experience. It is PAINFULLY loud up close!

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

One point which interest me IS exactly what to do with fossil forms. Are we looking at ranks simply as 'this split occurred at this time period of our planet's history'? Or are we thinking more 'this split is this old'? The difference is that, if a clade diverged in the Paleocene but only...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

On the contrary, I would argue this shows that using objective criteria produces different results than using subjective criteria such as 'similarity' (to the human eye). Which criteria are preferred is another question entirely.

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

I'm not at all informed on the paleontology, but I've seen multiple datings that suggest most or even all regularly recognized modern bird orders crossed the dino extinction event. I even chose the date originally specifically because it was the oldest date I could find at the time (I started...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

My personal list uses such an approach. I chose dates with the aim of minimizing taxonomic while connecting date thresholds to geological time periods. I won't say this was the 'best' approach, but it was simply very easy to find dates to consider that way. With orders set at roughly* 66 MYA, I...

    Ardeidae

I found it interesting that the samples from northern Africa grouped w/ the Asian birds in the UCE analysis, while javanica grouped w/ the African birds in the mtDNA analysis. It makes me want to see a much more detailed study before any split within the Old World forms is suggested.
