A Tit- but which one. Banks of Dodder river in Ireland

    It's a juvenile Great Tit

    The ultimate range maps

For me the ultimate maps are created by iNaturalist, which for some reason has yet to gain traction among birders. Choose any species you like, go to maps and add the GBIF layer. Doesn't get much better than this IMHO Here's House Sparrow...

Time calibration and Linnean ranks in birds

I really love this as a mind game, as it really helps understanding some things. On the other hand, I really don't like some of the outcomes, with the changes to Passeriformes being the worst and having little to no real-life value. The more I think about it, the better I think the current...

    Accipitridae

I was quite surprised that I had seen no mentions of Goshawk (and others) requiring new genuses (Astur, Tachyspiza, Aerospiza, Microspizias). However, I notice the paper is still only in preprint and has not been mentioned here (albeit having been posted last July already). So here we go...

    Alaudidae

From a quick glance at the figures, E. australis would need then a new genus too. I don't think anything is mandatory in this case, even though it may be merited for whatever reasons. For some reason it kinda bugs me, that often you tend to emphasize your personal preferences with strong...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

There was also huge discussion on Facebook, in some threads a little more hostile than here. In my view, there are three main reasons for the "witch hunt", which I feel was partly deserved, yet I don't feel good about it. First, the glaring errors in the list. There are like two dozen species...

    (Not only) Thamnophilidae

Is it definitely a species or could it be a subspecies? They simply call it 'taxon' in their abstract, which could mean a lot of things

    South Island Kokako......?

While I envy your optimism, the tales of Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Thylacine and countless own experiences with short glimpses of potential megas that subsequently turned out to be mich more common and expected species, have taught me to become more sceptical of sightings that involve some level...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Thanks for reviewing your list, fixing the (very few) issues and keeping us informed. I guess you have a few undescribed taxa that once described will immediately get accepted as species in your list too, so you probably actually hit 10.000 species a little earlier, than anyone realised. Given...

    South Island Kokako......?

The pictures show quite clearly a NZ Falcon and the Trust has acknowledged it in the accompanying FB thread

Thanks for the quote, I had overlooked the "delete account altogether" part.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Back to the topic. Interestingly, Jason Mann's list is now gone from IGoTerra and there's an amended statement that congratulates only Peter on his 10.000 species. I wonder how that happened.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

The following species claimed by J Mann seem outright impossible to me: Manipur Bush Quail, New Caledonian Nightjar, Buff-breasted Buttonquail, Pohnpei Starling, Bates's Weaver, Duida Grass Finch, Auckland Rail, Tachira Antpitta, Guadalupe Junco and unless he flew his own helicopter to those...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I just double-checked. I'm quite surprised by the number of these that Peter also claims: Zapata Rail, Buff-breasted Buttonquail, Jerdon's Courser, Chestnut-shouldered Goshawk, Albertine Owlet, Western Wattled Cuckooshrike, Sooty Shrikethrush, Dusky Tetraka, Bahama Nuthatch, Cozumel Thrasher...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

I compiled the list using my list of "Inaccessible species". Not all of these are completely impossible, I put those in brackets, which I deem actually possible (but on the list)
