    Check your local railway line

True. The local train station was closed years ago. The surrounds are a now neglected wasteland. Every year a pair of Oystercatcher breed or attempt to breed there. It also hosts Common Whitethroat regularly. Our local cricket club borders an industrial estate and again Oystercatcher breed...

    Check your local railway line

If you live near a railway line which runs parallel to a footpath or close to a place you can access on foot, it's worth checking it out this Spring. My local patch in South Cumbria includes sections which crosses the railway either on road or foot bridges, and includes stretches close to a...

Cool video I found on the internet- Bird Migration on Merchant Ships

I've posted a thread on the sea watching forum about seeing a falcon hanging around our ship crossing the North Sea recently. It was most likely a juvenile Peregrine Falcon from the views I had of it, which weren't brilliant - I was looking through the misted windows of the buffet restaurant...

The North Sea v The Irish Sea

Thanks for that. Thanks for that. Very illuminating. Seeing what was most likely a Peregrine that far out is a first for me.

    Norway cruise

You might want to look at my report in the vacations forum on here 'A 14 night Cruise from Southampton to Norway and Iceland, 22/6/23 to 6/7/23' It includes reports of what you might see on the sea days. Just done another cruise to Norway including Olden and Haugesund. Not much to see in terms...

The North Sea v The Irish Sea

Thanks! Never realised that. We were passing a few oil platforms. It looked very much like a juvenile. We had short visit from a pipit and a starling too. On our last cruise to Norway in September a Blackbird was on board from the first morning after we left Southampton and stayed with us until...

The North Sea v The Irish Sea

Agreed, the North Sea can be a bit random to say the least although this year there was a lot more around than previous cruises; enough to keep me out on deck with the bins most days.

The North Sea v The Irish Sea

We've just done a couple of cruises, one to Norway and Iceland, the other to Norway. It was interesting to compare the Irish Sea and the North Sea. We've sailed both several times on previous cruises and the Irish Sea always comes out the winner, probably because you're never far from land on...

    Birding holidays not requiring car

Go on a cruise! You won't need a car for sea watching on the sea days obviously and if you do a little research beforehand you can often work out the possibilities for birdwatching when you're in port using public transport or walking around the port destination. Just done a couple of cruises-...

    Excellent service from Hawke

In the past I've bought my optical equipment and tripods from Wilkinsons Cameras. Twice I've had issues after I bought them and they've been excellent in either replacing them or getting them fixed.

    Excellent service from Hawke

Not sure of the technicalities but basically central focus wheel needed adjusting. It was slightly out of focus at its maximum position. When they returned them it was working well again. I'd be tempted to return them again and insist they're checked properly.
