    Washington state may 24, gadwall or female cinnamon teal?

    Certainly not Gadwall. I think it looks okay for Cinnamon Teal. I'd expect a stronger face pattern on Blue-winged.

    First Butterflies 2024

    Winter egg hunts are finding them all over the place. There has been a real increase in sightings over the last few years. Wonder if it's a climatic response as Blackthorn is as common as muck, so food plant was never an issue, though does need sensitive management regarding hedge management.

    May Moths

    Sadly haven't got to any trapping sessions recently. Had hoped to go about 10 days ago at a local reserve but tested positive for Covid on my return from Greece, though felt okay. Yesterday during a flora survey came across 6 Brown-silver Lines, Cinnabar, Diamond-back & Glyphipterix fuscoviridella.

    Garden gate snail

    White-lipped snail, Cepaea hortensis. Numerous colour forms & often called Banded snails along with Brown-lipped Snails.

    UK Dragonflies and Damselflies 2024

    Had 9 Hairy Dragonfly at the London Wetland Centre yesterday with small numbers of Azure & a couple of Blue-tailed Damselflies. Have seen a few Large Reds in recent days at various places as well as several Common Blue Damsels today too.

    Not UK, but a mature male Red-veined Darter was photographed near Haarlem, Netherlands a couple of days ago. One of the earliest records from north-west Europe.
