There has been a huge decline the number of Yellow Wagtails in England and Wales since the 1970s, probably due to farming and land-use changes, to the extent these birds are now listed as a red species. Traditionally, yellow wagtails are considered a wetland species but there has been a shift in habitat preference towards arable land. They're pretty vocal little birds, announcing their arrival as they perch on a stone wall. Also, they have the shortest tail of the three British wagtails.
